Modern Approaches to the Canterbury Tales
Here’s a brief overview of the pages we’ve created to provide a fresh, fun space for studying and discussing our favorite of Chaucer’s pilgrims!
Creative Adaptations: Here we have a couple of different approaches to studying the Wife of Bath through student made creative adaptations. First, we have an imagined dating profile based on the information Chaucer provides in her prologue. This page includes a “Draw My Life” video with wonderful illustrations to help visualize some of the biographical information in “The Wife of Bath’s Prologue.” This page also includes a stage adaptation as an attempt at imagining the memories the Wife shares about her fourth and fifth marriages. The final creative adaptation on this page is a gender-bent reimagining of “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” to consider the way gender functions in the story.
Modern Interpretive Lenses: This page explores the ways that various modern lenses of interpretation contribute to our understanding of the Wife of Bath. We are particularly interested in modern concepts surrounding sexuality, love, and gender dynamics because we know that our readings of Chaucer are influenced by our own ideologies that might not fall in line with medieval ideologies!
Lesson Plan: Finally, we have a thorough lesson plan created to guide prospective students and teachers that includes everything we would have liked to have when we started studying the Wife of Bath ourselves.
