CHAUCER’S “THE SQUIRE’S TALE” Who was the Squire? In Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, the General Prologue describes the Knight’s son, the Squire, to be a lively young man who was physically well-built and strong.  The Squire embarked on ruthless and violent raids, called chyvachies, with the hopes of winning the love and approval of his lover.  Not only was he extremely fashionable, but he also participated in the courtly pastimes: writing, jousting, and drawing. However, he was not as well versed in his storytelling abilities as his tale comprised of unfinished thoughts and rambling of other stories. What is the “Squire’s Tale”? The Squire begins by narrating a story about a mysterious young knight visiting King Cambyuskan of the Mongol empire on his birthday bearing magical gifts from the King of Arabia and India.  A magic ring is given to Cambyuskan’s daughter, Canacee, that gives her the ability to understand birds and a sword with the power to heal.
